BREAK THE NORM. TELL A MATE WHY YOU LOVE THEM.

For a lot of men, telling a mate how you actually feel is a lot harder than it should be. Which is strange considering how much time you spend talking to them, texting them and ranting to them about the state of Portsmouth’s away kit…

In fact, 3 in 5 men in the UK have never told their mates they love them. It’s easy for feelings to get hidden beneath a deluge of banter, which is when things start to bottle up. And that’s not healthy. Because mates need love too. Which is why we’re teaming up with our brilliant charity partner Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) to do something about it.

We’re going to reclaim Valentine’s Day for the mates, not just for the couples. Because Big Dave needs to hear those three little words too.

Don’t be scared, you don’t need to buy any flowers or book a restaurant, just tell them how you feel. It could make all the difference. Here are a few things below that you can get involved with to set you on your way…

Joe Marler shows his love for mate Chris Stark

We’ve teamed up with CALM ambassador, rugby legend and all-round Traitor, Joe Marler, to SMASH through the barriers that stop men from opening up - with a big, bold exclamation of love to his long term mate - Capital radio presenter Chris Stark. Watch below to see how the big gesture went down.

Joe and Chris

Adam & Ciaran

Watch Adam surprise Ciaran in Glasgow with a skyline-sized way of saying what mates don’t always say out loud.

PJ & Mandeep

See PJ turn Camden into a love letter to his best mate Mandeep.

Ryan & Leon

Watch Leon pull off a Bradford curry-house surprise Ryan won’t forget.

Tell a mate you love them this Valentine’s Day. We’ll sort the first round.

Roses are red. Violets are blue.

We’ll sort the pint, if you tell a mate why you love them too. This Feb, we’ve teamed up with DUSK to give you a free pint of Neck Oil to send to a mate - as a reason to meet up, have a drink, and actually say the thing.

Pick a pub, send the invite, grab a drink and say it properly, face to face.

TELL A MATE WHY YOU LOVE THEM FAQS

A Valentine’s campaign to encourage people to open up and tell their mates how they really feel. We’ve partnered with mental health charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) to help get more honest conversations started.

We’ve teamed up with DUSK so you can send a mate a free pint of Neck Oil as an excuse to meet up and say those three special words, face to face. Click this link that will take you to DUSK’s page, choose a pub, and follow the steps to send your mate an invite.

18+ only. Available at participating venues, at venue discretion and while stocks last. Venues reserve the right to refuse service. One redemption per person unless stated otherwise. Please drink responsibly, for the facts, drinkaware.co.uk.

Yes. Many participating pubs offer Beavertown Lazer Crush (alcohol-free) in place of Neck Oil. Just ask at the bar.

At Beavertown, we believe in living without fear of judgement and saying exactly how we feel. And we reckon it’s about time we stopped bottling things up.

This is our third year running partnering with suicide prevention charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), working together to take a big old sledgehammer to the idea that staying silent is normal. We want to show people a better, braver way.

We thought you’d never ask.  Simply visit the Beavertown x CALM homepage for more information, right… here.

That sounds really difficult and something that can be quite hard to navigate. But CALM has lots of handy tips and guides on what to do and say in these situations. Head over to their website and search ‘Worried about someone’ for advice on how to support your mate.

CALM’s helpline and webchat are also here for you and open from 5pm until midnight. Please reach out to them on 080 58 58 58, or chat to their trained helpline staff online.

For immediate help, please call emergency services on 999 or The Samaritans on 116 123. There is a way forward.

This particular campaign leans into research we ran that revealed a high proportion of men in the UK (62%) struggle to say “I love you” to their mates or share how they’re really feeling. That said, the message behind Tell a Mate Why You Love Them is universal - everyone benefits from honest, supportive friendships, and we hope it inspires people of all genders to share how they feel with those they care about.

Who are Campaign Against Living Miserably?

Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), is a suicide prevention charity on a mission to help people end their misery, not their lives.

1 in 4 of us will have suicidal thoughts in our lifetime and every day 18 people in the UK take their own lives. CALM exists to change this - by offering life-saving support, creating culture changing campaigns, and bringing people together across the country to reject living miserably.

From the CALMzone app full of science-backed support to help you feel better, to their life-saving suicide prevention helpline, they’ve got tons of ways to help. Because looking after your head shouldn’t be behind a paywall.
