Does Alcohol Free Beer Taste the Same?

You might wrinkle up your nose at the phrase ‘alcohol-free beer’ but we promise it’s not as bleak as it sounds. Just because it’s low or no alcohol doesn’t mean you have to compromise on taste. Alcohol free beer tastes just as good as normal beer. Don’t believe us?

We’re gonna tell you all about it.

What Makes Beer Taste Like Beer?

That beer flavour we love so much comes from the yeast, hops, and malt used in the beer making process. Hops give it that slightly bitter earthy citrus flavour. The malt is what gives it colour – dark roast gives it a dark colour and a light roast gives it a paler colour. Yeast is used to ferment the hops and barley which is how beer gets its iconic flavour. And is responsible for the alcohol. Thirsty for more? Learn more about how beer is made.

Why Does Alcohol Free Beer Taste Bad?

So you now know that regular beer only has 4 ingredients. But guess what? Non-alcoholic beer is also made with the SAME 4 ingredients. Don’t believe us? Read our blog on how alcohol free beer is made. Mind-blowing stuff.

  • Malt
  • Hops
  • Water
  • Yeast

That's all you need. And by just tweaking the ingredients here and there, like the amounts and the type, the flavours can drastically change. It really is an art form.

Once upon a time (don’t worry, this story is actually quite interesting), there wasn’t a lot of alcohol-free beer on the market. If you were the designated driver or couldn’t drink alcohol, your choices were limited to a few options. But then your hoppy hero Beavertown came along. We were at the forefront of the alcohol free IPA movement and worked out a way to make a really tasty alcohol-free IPA that’s basically impossible to tell apart from the regular stuff.

Well… like beer. The great bitter, hoppy, fruity taste we all love is all there. And you can hardly even tell there’s no alcohol.

Looking for a fun party game (who cares if we’re adults)? Do a taste test challenge to see who can tell which beer is non-alcoholic. Instead of showing off your shadow puppetry skills.

Still sceptical? We get it. But these two low and no alcohol beers from Beavertown will sway your opinion.

Lazer Crush

Lazer Crush is our out-of-this-world alcohol-free IPA that is light on the alcohol but heavy on the flavour. With bags of sweet orange zestiness and grapefruit bitterness.

When we brewed up the idea for an alcohol-free beer, we didn’t want to make just any old beer. Instead of dealcoholising the brew after fermentation (which is the most common way to do it), we used a clever strain of yeast that fully ferments without producing alcohol. Handy! And it adds a hint of peachy fruit flavours to boot. The result is a rocket-fueled, turbocharged, laser-sharp IPA at a Monday to Sunday crushable 0.3%

Satellite

Satellite is our super session IPA. It sits at a comfy 2.8% ABV with flavour waves of tropical pineapple and juicy peach. It’s the perfect thirst-quencher any day of the week – pulling together picnics in the park, chill weeknights in, or movie nights with ease.
